My comment:

bivouac, termine francese che sicuramente avrai già incontrato, ed è gergo militare.
Altrimenti makeshift camp, ma credo sia più "civile"
per quel "mezzo"... onestamente non esiste una traduzione in inglese, credo che almost è quello che più si avvicina al senso.
