Mientras los ya no asistentes al funeral de Katy se amontonaban en torno a la orilla del río, curiosos y hablando sin cesar de sus aburridas y detestables vidas más allá de aquellas tórridas palabras, la Guardia Civil sacaba del agua a un hombre relativamente joven que había sido encontrado por otro forastero.

My comment:

Does it refer to the priest's homily, or one of the relatives' tribute to Katy? Fiery sounds more like tórridas.
