[XXX spoke up against this book, citing the...problems of truth, posed by the author’s arguments...] puisque les censeurs considéraient que les genealogies présentées par Mexia étaient soit fabuleuses, soit ouvertement mensongères.

In this context I can't decide between censors, advisors, observers...or another meaning.
