Amanda Haste PhD, DipTrans(IoLET), MCIL, CL  See profile asked this question:

Language pair:

French > English

Subject:

Sciences / Non-fiction books

Level of diffculty:

Easy / medium

Word or term in question:

les derniers rejetons

Context:

De pipiltin mexica, ils étaient devenus les derniers rejetons d’une lignée guerrière.

I've found various definitions of 'rejetons', including 'misfits' and 'offspring'. Hardly the same thing!

NB The pipiltin mexica were a noble class.

My comment:

the advantage of offspring is that it keeps the botanic image.

My comment:

It is true that it sometimes has a pejorative sense, but not here IMO.
