Barbara R. Cochran (a guest user) asked this question:

Language pair:

Spanish > English

Subject:

General

Level of diffculty:

Easy / medium

Word or term in question:

que se puede poner muy mal

Context:

- ¡No soy cruel ni perversa, solo te estoy diciendo la verdad? ¿Y crees que a mí no me duele? Me duele tanto como a ti!

- ¡Cállate! ¡Que no escuche tu abuela, que se puede poner muy mal!

The first person speaking is saying the her cousin is dead, even though he showed up at the family Christmas party.

I think it must mean "it could make you very ill", but I am looking for something that reflects more of the mental health aspect. Perhaps "it could make you crazy"?

"...she (the grandmother) could become quite unsettled (disturbed)!"

My comment:

When you're thinking of the mental state, you usually envision "trastornada" (unbalanced or unsettled).

"Se puede poner muy mal", could also suggest that IF the grandmother suffers from other medical ailments, they could be triggered acutely by the state of shock or disbelief, of what she has just overheard...
