L'unité fondamentale disciplinaire est aussi appelée unité d'enseignement complémentaire (UEC): l'étudiant approfondit une matière d'un tronc commun = core curriculum ou foundation course. C'est pour avoir an honours degree, et non un simple pass ou ordinary degree. Malgré l'harmonisation européenne, chaque pays a ses spécificités.
