It sounds to me that it is of indeterminate value. Are you sure it's "conter" ? It should be something like "compter" or "contre"?

Yes, definitely given as 'conter'in the (mercifully legible) manuscript, but the meaning is 'compter'. Written in 1828, and a copy at that, so there are errors in the transcription (or original).
