Context:	Grazie alla ricchezza di risorse idriche, i paesaggi erano primariamente caratterizzati dalle colture di prati irrigui e dall'allevamento del bestiame, che tra l'altro metteva a disposizione il letame per concimare i campi; inoltre l'espansione dell'allevamento comporterà l'avvento dei prati artificiali che, insieme ai pascoli, verranno chiusi da siepi, alberi o fossati. Si diffusero, infatti, le "piantate" (si veda anche 1.2), ossia filari di alberi che delimitavano la regolare geometria degli appezzamenti di grande dimensione; tra queste erano assai comuni quelle costituite da gelsi, una pianta diffusasi con lo sviluppo della lavorazione della seta (vedi il modulo Economia e società, 4.1), poiché le sue foglie rappresentano il principale alimento dei bachi da seta.
