Malgrado ciò, grazie al suo ruolo di rottura di schemi conservatori e aristocratici, la proposta manzoniana fu accolta con grande favore soprattutto tra la nuova borghesia risorgimentale, tanto che si creò una corrente di "manzonisti" che si impegnarono affinché, nel nuovo Stato unificato politicamente, il fiorentino parlato dalle persone colte divenisse la lingua unificante. Come sempre avviene quando le soluzioni di un problema linguistico vengono dettate d’autorità e a colpi di "norma", era inevitabile che ciò portasse ad una sorta di nuovo purismo: veniva sostituito l’oggetto linguistico da "somministrare", ma non si aboliva la convinzione che la diffusione della lingua unitaria dovesse essere il frutto di una somministrazione normativa. |
