Stretti tra le montagne e il mare, Micenei effettuarono intensi movimenti migratori, conquistando le coste e le isole dell'Egeo e assumendo il controllo politico ed economico del Mediterraneo orientale. Come i Cretesi e più dei Cretesi svilupparono i traffici marittimi.

My comment:

They developed the maritime sector as if it belonged to them, even more than the Cretans themselves. One would have expected the Cretans to develop it not the Mycenaeans

Yes, Cretans as used in the other part which I translated as well. Maritime, not mMaritime. yes, as you say but I did not have to translate that but just gave an idea of how it could be contim=nued by way of explanation.
