It comes from the nautical term "faire un point", which means to determine the current geographical location of a ship (so, "to sum up the ship's current situation"). This has become "faire le point" (to take stock, to summarise the current situation), from which "un point", meaning a status report or a status meeting, is derived.

A date est une expression québécoise calquée sur l'anglais "to date". Elle signifie donc "maintenant/à ce jour/en ce moment". Quant à "réaliser un point", c'est encore une expression basée sur un anglicisme (encore les Québécois qui ont sévi,).
