Barbara Cochran (a guest user) asked this question:

Language pair:

Spanish > English

Subject:

General

Level of diffculty:

Easy / medium

Word or term in question:

él estaba muy por encima de ella

Context:

—Bri ¿Gale te ha pedido que te cases con él? —se ruborizó al escucharla, porque era algo sobre lo que intentaba no pensar.
—No, cariño.
Ella sabía que él estaba muy por encima de ella y, aunque pensaba que la quería de verdad, no creía que llegara a pedírselo nunca.

Does this mean something like "head over heels for her"? Thanks

He was very much above her league

My comment:

I understand the whole means something like"even though he was above her league, she felt he did love her, but also that he was not likely to ever ask her to marry him."

he was above her in terms of social status

Various ways of saying this this is one of them, or he was over & above her

She knew that he was way above her (as in social status)

My comment:

It has nothing to do with being "head over heels", it's her realization that although she thinks he loves her, she didn't think he'd ever ask her to marry him due to the social difference between them.

above her socially, above her on the ladder, upper crust

My comment:

She thought he would never ask her to marry him, even though he really loved her, that he would think she was too much below his social class.
