Barbara R Cochran (a guest user) asked this question:

Language pair:

French > English

Subject:

General

Level of diffculty:

Easy / medium

Word or term in question:

étroitement mêlés

Context:

Une note du 8 octobre qui parut au « cahier du jour », sous le numéro 4841, indique ce transfert et déclenche toute une série de faits auxquels les fonctionnaires des Musées de France allaient se trouver étroitement mêlés.

Do you think "embroiled" would work in this case? Thanks

My comment:

ad "embroiled" : yes, absolutely!
NB: embrouiller (syn.) = mêler

were to be closely involved in

My comment:

It all depends on whether the "fonctionnaires des musées de France" had a negative role as suggested by the translation"embroiled" or if their role is positive or neutral.

Yes

My comment:

Because embroiled has negative connotations - suggests something they got involved with unwittingly/unwillingly, and that the outcome was not something they’d have wished for
