It seems that - in modern French at least - the term 'support' means very concretely, an object that supports another. It can also mean 'medium', as in 'any material element that transmits information', e.g. newspapers. It's hard to know what the best translation would be, but as the word is most often used and kept alive by association with the English 'support', I'd just go with 'support'. Hope this is helpful!
