My comment:

This is what a surgeon (in the UK) would write in the operation notes in the patient's chart. Obviously it is an abbreviation and the full text would be "specimen(s) to laboratory".

Sending off of pieces of the tissue involved, like to a lab for analysis, I would suppose.
