Au chapitre de noir, les ruines de Smyrne sous le feu des turcs figuraient en bonne place. Les clichés anciens exprimaient crûment la souffrance et la désolation des grecs de Smyrne. Etienne en gardait le cœur serré.

The "en" complicates things, I included it as "about it," it may be accurate although not very elegant.
