It's not really a translation... I'll admit, more of an explanation, how I understand it, but it would fit in the context really well... If you could take a few liberties with the translation??

My comment:

"insulter l'avenir" est déjà une formule mal choisie: si c'est dans le sens d'hypothéquer, c'est "mortgage"; si c'est dans le sens de gâcher, porter la poisse, c'est "jinx" ou "mar" ; si c'est dans le sens de défier, c'est "challenge".
