Luego, una vez cerrada la puerta, miró por el pestillo por si había alguien fuera. Isolina se asustó. Nunca la había visto así. Entonces entendió que Aníbal no había fallecido, porque estaba mirando que no llegase de repente. "Looked at the bolt to the door to make sure no one (Aníbal) was trying to get in from the outside?"

My comment:

He's trying to see who's outside, so it would make more sense to me that he would be looking through the hole rather than "at the bolt"
