Word or term in question: |
promossero una indagine a tutto campo |
|
Context: |

My comment:
THIS IS MY DEMONSTRATION.
PLEASE DISREGARD THE REFERENCE SECTION
UNLESS YOU WANT MORE DETAILS.

1. "una indagine":
Historically, it was a SURVEY, not an investigation/inquiry/enquiry:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Great_Trigonometrical_Survey
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Survey_of_India
https://indianexpress.com/article/research/survey-of-india-turns-250-remembering-a-british-past-when-mapping-was-for-the-sake-of-conquering-4609008/
"The office of the Survey of India completed 250 years on Tuesday. Entrusted with the duty of collection of data, mapping and topographical research, the institute came into existence ***in 1767, three years after the British East India Company emerged victorious in the Battle of Buxar***."
"However, an examination of the institute’s inception would reveal a much darker past, when its establishment was ***firmly tied with the British ambitions of conquest***."
"a series of surveys and mapping exercises were carried out"
---
2. "a tutto campo":
https://mymemory.translated.net/en/Italian/English/promossero-una-indagine-a-tutto-campo# suggests "ALL-OUT", which I prefer for this CONTEXT, because of its COUBLE meaning:
1. "using every available means",
2. "covering all aspects without exception",
See https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/all-out (translated as "a tutto campo" in the translation section)
and
https://glosbe.com/it/en/a%20tutto%20campo
---
3. "promuovere":
https://www.wordreference.com/iten/promossero :
= "favorire" (promote, foster, encourage, support) or "avviare":
COLLINS section of https://www.wordreference.com/iten/avviare :
" 1. ***(indirizzare: a **studi (studies, research), mestiere) to lead, direct***
2. (mettere in moto) to start (up)
avviare con la manovella (Aut): to crank, give a crank start to
3. (***iniziare***)
(attività, impresa) to start up, set up
(trattative) to set in motion
(discussione) to get going
(lavoro a maglia) to cast on"
Wordreference section:
"avviare⇒ vtr (mettere in funzione) (**machinery**) start⇒ vtr
power up vtr phrasal sep
launch"
"avviare vtr (intraprendere, iniziare) start⇒ vtr
begin⇒ vtr
launch⇒ vtr
The parties **started negotiations** to try to end the conflict."
=> THE BRITISH EITHER "LAUNCHED" OR "LED/DIRECTED" A SURVEY
=> When there are DOUBLE MEANINGS, we have to read online HISTORY BOOKS/PAGES...
Try the different meanings and see what works.
Online research tools also automatically suggest SYNONYMS.
=> I often get "CONDUCT A SURVEY".
or, in the above sentence "a series of surveys and mapping exercises were ***carried out***"
=> THE BRITISH CARRIED OUT A SURVEY
But "conducted" seems more exactly synonymous with "led / directed"...
My references:
THE BELOW REFERENCES ARE FOR REFERENCE ONLY.
THE DEMONSTRATION IS IN THE ABOVE "YOUR COMMENT" SECTION.
BUT PLEASE READ MY BELOW COMMENT ON CMD'S TIME-CONSUMING AND BESIDE-THE-POINT "DEMONSTRATION"...
"promuovere⇒ vtr (favorire, avviare) promote⇒, foster⇒, encourage⇒ vtr
(monetarily) support⇒ vtr
I always encourage my friends to buy products that I like."

And may I stress that, as usual, CMD's links are a total LOSS OF OUR PRECIOUS TIME AND DO NOT PROVE HIS POINT. HIS TACTICS ARE TOTALLY DISHONEST AND A NUISANCE.
He is a dictator who only tolerates approvals!... :-/
He does not extract the ad hoc text, so his method is time-saving FOR HIM, but time-consuming FOR US!
We have to scroll through ENTIRE PAGES, ONLY TO FIND OUT THEY DO NOT PROVE HIS POINT - and he does this ALL THE TIME...
And he is the one being "arrogant". Please note that psychopaths are manipulators who accuse other people of what they are and do themselves...
In the other question thread, I was only using the website features, which allows for comments, and despite appearances they were ultimately aimed at the Asker, who might hesitate between two answer: did the other Answerer agree that his/her response was erroneous and that mine was correct? This was not an "arrogant" but purely linguistic process.
So this vicious, unfounded attack could also come from a perverse psychopath, hiding under mysterious initials...
I have had to fight perverse psychopath Jane Lamb-Ruiz on translatorscafe. Not another one here, please!
One more such attack and I report him to the website's owner.
His attacked seemed only aimed at getting all the points and discouraging other answerers from participating, especially when they are good or better...
On translatorscafe, the moderator was an accomplice, so I couldn't defend myself.
Not here!!! :-)
OK, let's continue:

"indagine [inˈdadʒine] sf
(inchiesta) investigation, inquiry, enquiry
fare o svolgere un'indagine (su): to carry out an investigation o inquiry (into)
le indagini della polizia: police investigations
(ricerca) research, study
fare o svolgere un'indagine su: to carry out o do research into, make a study of
■indagine su campione: sample ***survey***
■indagine demoscopica: public opinion poll
■indagine di mercato: market ***survey***

"a tutto campo: across the board, wide-ranging; all-round
We need wide-ranging research to identify the cause of the infection."
at https://www.wordreference.com/iten/a%20tutto%20campo
---
mymemory.translated.net suggested: "an all-out investigation"
all-out:
- 'Using all available means or resources:
an all-out sprint;
an all-out conservation program.'
- 'using one's maximum powers:
an all-out effort.'
at https://www.thefreedictionary.com/all-out
but https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/all-out (translated as "a tutto campo" in the translation section) gives 2 MEANINGS (see the above COMMENT section).
