Ils n’en étaient pas moins tout aussi inquiétants pour le sort des dépôts et celui des collections nationales, car ils découlaient de conceptions très particulières qu’avaient certains chefs hitlériens désireux de servir, à leur manière, la plus grande Allemagne. I know what the phrase means but just want to know the best way to word it in English.

My comment:

I chose "disconcerting" as the author is referring to inanimate objects as opposed to persons, like Hitler.
